Disability Discrimination ActThe Disability Discrimination Act has been in existence for a number of years but the full provisions of the Act become effective from 1st October 2004. By then all churches must have taken reasonable measures to ensure that disabled persons are not in any way disadvantaged in their attendance at and use of churches and chapels.Although outside the normal remit of the Trust, in 2003 the Trust has arranged expert advice for churches where they have been unsure of the requirements and responsibilities of the Disability Discrimination Act. The Trust wrote to each church and chapel in Suffolk, asking them if they would like the advice of an expert and asking if they could make an estimate of the funds required to complete any necessary fabric work required by the new Act. About half the churches responded and of these, half asked for advice. This advice has been given in the form of a number of Disability Audits and Expert Advisory Visits, funded by the generous support of the Henry Smith Foundation. The Trust is now trying to build up a fund to support work that has been identified. As soon as funds become available, the Trust will inform all those who have recorded a requirement and invite applications. The Trust itself is not an authority on Disability Access, and therefore cannot take responsibility for giving advice. It does however, have access to some publications, information and general guidance to which churches and chapels can be directed.
