Pedal & Drive Car Rally

Pedal and Drive – now classic and vintage cars are joining the Ride and Stride on Saturday, 12 September 2020.

Since 1982 families all over Suffolk have taken to their bicycles on the second Saturday in September to ride from church to church raising money for our wonderful heritage of churches & chapels. Each year half of the c£150,000 they raise goes straight back to the 400 churches & chapels across Suffolk who open their doors to welcome the bicyclists, with the balance going to grant aid those of our churches in vital need of financial help for their repairs.

These days a minority stride on foot rather than by bicycle. Now we are extending the challenge to owners of Vintage & Classic Cars to join in the fun! Around the county a number of historic country house owners have kindly agreed to host a start point. The plan is to assemble for morning coffee at a designated house, and then the cars will make their own way across Suffolk visiting churches on a treasure hunt of curiosities ending at the afternoon rally on the Upper Green at Long Melford CO10 9DN.

On arrival at Long Melford a welcoming cup of tea & homemade cake awaits. And a glittering host of machines to admire! There will be a quiz to enter & champagne prizes for the quiz winner, for the best dressed team, and so on. The great Judging will be at 15.30.

As with the bicycle riders, we hope car entrants will invite friends & family to support the cause. We will be giving each a sponsorship form/collection envelope. The average cyclist these days raises about £150 & some even get over the £1,000 mark! There will be a magnum of champagne on the day for the car owner who has raised the most sponsorship.

If you want to take part in the rally to aid the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust please email putting in the email header APPLICATION & your name. Entry is £40 a car. We will send you an entry form with payment details by return. Spaces outside the country houses are limited so please apply early. If you cannot take part but want to give a donation to support the event please do so via Just Giving at:

Together we can make a huge difference to preserving Suffolk’s unique legacy of churches & chapels. The Suffolk Historic Churches Trust is an entirely volunteer organisation & 99% of what you raise will go to the fabric of Suffolk’s wonderful array of churches & chapels.
